Team Europe has reclaimed the Solheim Cup trophy after a dramatic final day of singles matches against Team USA at the Bernardus Golf Club in the Netherlands. Entering Sunday in rainy conditions, the teams were deadlocked at 8-8, meaning Europe required at least six and a half points to secure the title, exactly two years after their defeat to the Americans.
Charley Hull set an early positive tone for the hosts by defeating Megan Khang 3&2, giving Europe an immediate lead. Throughout the day, Anna Nordqvist’s squad held the advantage in eight of the twelve matches at various stages. Linn Grant extended Europe’s momentum with a victory over Angel Yin, completing a flawless week for the World No 1.
Despite Europe’s control, Team USA threatened a comeback when Alison Lee overturned a four-shot deficit to beat Esther Henseleit 1up. The momentum shifted again when world number one Nelly Korda levelled the score by defeating rookie Mimi Rhodes 4&3. However, subsequent wins from Nastasia Nadaud, Nanna Koerstz Madsen, and Julia Lopez Ramirez pushed Europe within striking distance of the trophy.
The decisive moment arrived when Lottie Woad defeated Auston Kim 2&1, taking the hosts to 14 points and triggering celebrations on the course. This result guaranteed veteran Carlota Ciganda at least a half-point. Ciganda then sealed the historic win by defeating Jennifer Kupcho, avenging her side’s loss in the 2023 event held in Spain.
The Ladies European Tour now moves to Spain for the La Sella Open, while the LPGA Tour will take a brief hiatus before the Walmart N Arkansas Championship begins on September 25. The next Solheim Cup is scheduled for September 8-10, 2028, at Valhalla Golf Club in Kentucky.
Ciganda avenging her 2023 loss adds such a nice storyline to this victory!
Linn Grant’s perfect week is amazing. She really dominated from start to finish.
