Tatyana Ali Channels Traumatic Birth into Maternal Health Advocacy

Actor and singer Tatyana Ali has emerged as a prominent voice in the fight for reproductive justice, driven by what she describes as a traumatic childbirth experience marked by systemic racism in healthcare. In 2016, during the delivery of her first son, Aszi, Ali stated that her birth plan was disregarded and that she was physically restrained by medical staff.

Ali recounted the chaos at the hospital, describing doctors and nurses screaming and holding her down. She alleges that a physician performed the Zavanelli maneuver—a rare last-resort procedure involving pushing the baby’s head back into the birth canal—after her son was already crowning. Ali said she roared in pain, convulsed, and lost consciousness as the bed shook violently, leading to an emergency cesarean section. Her son spent several days in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Initially, Ali did not recognize the severity of the medical mistreatment. It was only after hearing similar accounts from other women of color that she understood her experience as part of a broader pattern of “obstetric violence.” She attributed the incident to systemic racism within the medical system, noting, “I was just one tiny drop in a very, very large bucket that has been overflowing for a very, very long time.”

Today, the 47-year-old actress is channeling her healing journey into advocacy for Black and Indigenous maternal health. Through her initiative, Baby Yams, she raises funds and awareness for birth workers, including midwives and doulas. Ali emphasizes that while motherhood is her most significant role, she continues to work in Hollywood, with an upcoming appearance on a new season of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.”
