The data suggests that if this heightened focus on the president persists through Election Day, it could surpass his own 2018 benchmark for presidential influence in midterm races.

Conducted between September 8 and 11, 2026, the poll identifies economic concerns—specifically inflation and rising prices—as the primary drivers of voter sentiment against the ruling party, mirroring trends from two years prior. Unlike previous cycles where dissatisfaction stemmed from fears of personal financial decline, current opposition appears largely reactive. Most voters expressed skepticism that either political party could improve their individual financial situations, opting instead to vote based on resistance to current policies.

CBS News’ statistical model, which translates national polling data into projected congressional seats, currently estimates Democrats with 228 seats, securing a majority over the Republicans’ 218.
