Indonesian authorities reported on Sunday that a ferry carrying 243 people capsized in the Java Sea during severe weather, resulting in at least six fatalities and 130 people still missing. The vessel, identified as the Virgo Transport 8, lost contact with officials while en route from Surabaya to Banjarmasin.
Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi confirmed that 107 passengers had been successfully evacuated. However, he cautioned that the full scope of the tragedy remained unclear. “We cannot yet determine whether the victims are still inside the vessel or whether they may be some distance away from the location of the vessel,” Purwagandhi told reporters during a press conference in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, where he was overseeing rescue operations.
Rescue teams, including ships and a helicopter, have been deployed to search for survivors. Footage released by the National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS) showed individuals in orange life rafts being pulled from the water, while other rescued passengers received first aid on a nearby vessel.
The Directorate General of Sea Transportation stated that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the incident, examining whether it resulted from natural conditions, technical failure, or human error. This maritime disaster follows a separate ferry fire off Madura Island last month that claimed five lives.
