Officials from the Jersey harbour have committed to holding discussions with local residents who have raised alarms regarding the disposal of sand and silt on St Aubin beach following recent dredging operations.
Concerns were formally lodged through letters submitted to the Government of Jersey’s environment department by 24 individuals. The complainants argued that the dredging activities in St Aubin pose risks to both local wildlife and the safety of the public.
Environment Minister Mary Le Hegarat confirmed that officers intend to convene with a complainant in the coming days to review the circumstances before providing a report. This assessment will allow her to determine any necessary course of action.
Jersey Harbour Master Captain William Sadler expressed his eagerness to engage with both the local community and the environmental department to address these issues. He emphasized that the dredging is a standard procedure designed to ensure safe vessel access to the harbour and is conducted under appropriate licences and regulatory supervision.
Reflecting on the importance of the location, Sadler noted that Ports of Jersey places significant value on both the natural environment and the communities it serves. He added that the organization is dedicated to balancing the safe operation of the harbour with the preservation of St Aubin’s Bay character and ecosystem.
In a letter addressed to residents, Sadler acknowledged that the clearance work took place on 19 March. He stated that while there is currently no evidence linking the harbour works to all the problems described, the concerns regarding seagrass, wildlife, beach conditions, and access to St Aubin’s Fort are being taken seriously.
The correspondence indicated that an in-person meeting would offer an opportunity to provide further context on the works and allow locals to voice their objections directly.
