Chris Rock’s ‘Misty Green’ Premieres at TIFF: Rosalind Eleazar’s Performance Stuns Audiences

Chris Rock’s Hollywood satire “Misty Green” made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where it received enthusiastic audience reactions. The A24 production earned particular acclaim for the lead performance of Rosalind Eleazar, who plays a fading, award-winning actress navigating the darker aspects of the entertainment industry.

During a post-screening Q&A, Eleazar revealed she became “really desperate” to take on the role after reading the script in London. “It was such a raw and honest take on the darker side of our industry,” she said. Rock praised the complexity of the character, explaining, “I love a messy woman. I haven’t seen it with a woman, I haven’t seen it with a Black woman.”

The film functions as both a tour of Los Angeles’ artistic hot spots and an autopsy of the business, particularly for artists of color. While Rock skews “Hollywood” without naming names directly, the film features showcase moments for Eleazar, including a screen test sequence and musical performances.

Eleazar, recently named one of Variety’s 10 Actors to Watch for 2026, is already being discussed as a best actress contender. Only one Black woman, Halle Berry, has won the Academy Award for Best Actress since 2002. The film also features Daniel Kaluuya, Anna Kendrick, Adam Driver, Topher Grace, and Rock himself in supporting roles.

Rock described casting challenges due to the risqué nature of the script. “I know she’s a lovely lady and demure tonight, but you have these meetings, and you have to think to yourself: ‘Is she gonna smoke the cigarette in her underwear on the balcony? Is she gonna get on the floor and fight for the money?’”

Beyond its Hollywood satire, the film examines mental illness and redemption, particularly through Kaluuya’s role as Misty’s brother and Anderson’s portrayal of a police officer. The film opens in U.S. theaters on Oct. 9.
