Mark Williams has secured his place in the English Open final with a dramatic comeback victory over Shaun Murphy, where he will now face Ali Carter on Sunday.
The world number seven, Murphy, started strongly by racing into a 5-1 lead over the Welshman. However, the three-time world champion refused to surrender, clawing back five consecutive frames to steal a 6-5 win at the Brentwood Centre in Essex.
Murphy appeared to be closing out the match in the tenth frame with a break of 51, but he gifted Williams a lifeline. The 51-year-old seized the opportunity, compiling a break of 65 to level the match, and then produced a 69 to clinch the decider.
In the other semi-final, Ali Carter dominated China’s Ding Junhui with a straight-frames 6-2 victory. The Essex player, currently ranked 25th in the world, reached a highest break of 119 during the match.
Carter, who turns 47, highlighted the significance of the potential ranking boost. “To get in the top 16 at my ripe old age of 47 wouldn’t be too bad,” Carter said. “There is a lot to play for tomorrow, but I’m going to be in there fighting. I’m still competing with the best players in the world and it is a feather in my cap. “
Both competitors are seeking their maiden English Open title, having never previously reached the final of the event since its inception in 2016.
