Guimaraes and Raya lead Arsenal to Premier League victory over Sunderland

Arsenal maintained their 100% start to their Premier League title defense with a 2-0 victory against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Saturday. Bruno Guimaraes and David Raya were instrumental in securing the three points for the visitors.

Raya proved to be a pivotal figure, making a crucial penalty save just 121 seconds before Guimaraes struck with a thunderous shot to open the scoring. The Brazilian midfielder scored his first goal for the club, providing the spark Arsenal needed during a match where they struggled at times.

Sunderland had reason to complain about officiating moments earlier when Reinildo Mandava was sent off after conceding a penalty. The red card came after he was baited into fouling Bukayo Saka, who subsequently converted the spot-kick despite it being described as a weak finish.

For Arsenal, the defensive display was mixed. Ben White and Myles Lewis-Skelly were substituted at halftime after underwhelming performances, with Lewis-Skelly barely escaping an early booking. Jurrien Timber came on for White and brought more stability to the back line, though his header was ruled out for offside.

Up front, Kai Havertz missed a clear chance when the score was 0-0 but nearly equalized shortly after with an acrobatic effort that required a good save from Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs. Christos Tzolis looked lively in the early stages but faded as the game progressed.

Sunderland’s Brian Brobbey caused problems for the Arsenal defense with his strength and hold-up play, creating space for teammates even if he didn’t test the goalkeeper directly. Dan Ballard was the standout performer for the home side, winning the penalty that led to Mandava’s dismissal.

The result keeps Arsenal at the top of the table with a perfect record from their opening games, while Sunderland will rue missed opportunities and the late dismissal of their defender.
