Rare 10,000-Year-Old Mastodon Tooth Discovered in California

A fossilized molar from an ancient Pacific mastodon, a large mammal that once roamed North America, has been discovered in remarkable condition by a California scientist. The 10,000-year-old tooth was found intact in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Brigid Lynch, a geomorphologist, made the significant find while working at a preserve in San Mateo County. During her fieldwork, she identified a peculiar rock that turned out to contain the well-preserved fossil.
