Authorities in Chile have confirmed that at least 16 elderly residents lost their lives following a devastating fire at a nursing home in the southern town of Pitrufquen. The blaze, which started around 22:30 local time on Friday, required firefighters to work through the night and into Saturday morning before it was fully extinguished.

The incident occurred at the El Edén facility, located approximately 640 kilometers (400 miles) south of the capital, Santiago. In addition to the fatalities, ten other residents were successfully evacuated from the building. On Saturday, emergency crews continued to clear debris and remove collapsed corrugated metal roofing from the site, while police established safety cordons around the area.

Jorge Granada, the prosecutor leading the investigation, stated that the cause of the fire has not yet been determined. In response to the tragedy, Chilean President José Antonio Kast announced that a comprehensive review of nursing homes nationwide has been ordered.

President Kast emphasized the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability. “We will fully collaborate with the justice system to clarify what happened, determine where failures may have existed in oversight or prevention, identify what alerts were raised and what actions were taken in response to them,” he said. He added, “We need to know the truth and, based on that, correct whatever is necessary to do everything possible to prevent a tragedy like this from happening again.”

Local Mayor Jacqueline Romero expressed the community’s grief, noting that support services have been provided to the families affected by the loss. “It is a situation that fills our souls with great sorrow and pain,” she said.
