Altman and Musk Endorse Amodei’s Call to Slow AI Development

Altman and Musk Endorse Amodei’s Call to Slow AI Development

OpenAI chief Sam Altman and Tesla owner Elon Musk have publicly aligned with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei in advocating for a temporary halt to the development of ultra-powerful artificial intelligence systems. The call for a slowdown targets models that exceed current capabilities by a factor of ten or more.

Amodei, who led OpenAI before departing to establish Anthropic, argues that society has only a narrow window of approximately one year to institute effective safeguards before the technology becomes too advanced to control. He expressed confidence that high-profile figures in the industry would support this moratorium.

Altman, who previously worked alongside Amodei at OpenAI, described the CEO as “brave” for raising these concerns. In a direct response to Amodei, Altman stated, “I think you’re right, and I’m with you. We need to slow down the frontier and invest in the safety work.”

Musk also voiced his support, confirming on the social media platform X that he stands with Amodei. The trio highlights the growing anxiety among the architects of the technology regarding the potential for catastrophic outcomes if AI systems surpass human oversight.

  1. I’m skeptical. They’ve spent years racing to the finish line. Will they really pause their own massive profits now?

  2. One year? That sounds impossibly short. How do you build safety infrastructure at this speed without collapsing the entire industry overnight?

  3. It is wild seeing Altman and Musk agree on something. Hopefully this actually leads to real regulation and not just PR.
