Conor Benn returns to the 147-pound division for the first time since April 2022 when he faces WBC champion Ryan Garcia at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday.
The 29-year-old British fighter is aiming to capture the crowning achievement of his decade-long professional career. With a record of 25 wins from 26 bouts, a victory would see him follow in the footsteps of his father, former world champion Nigel Benn, by claiming a WBC belt.
Garcia, 28, is making the inaugural defense of his title after securing a unanimous decision over Mario Barrios in February. The American boasts 25 wins in 28 career fights, including 20 knockouts, with two losses and one no-contest on his record.
BBC Sport consulted boxing figures for their predictions, with the overwhelming consensus favoring the champion.
Tony Bellew, the former cruiserweight world champion, offered a dissenting voice, suggesting the fight could be closer than anticipated. He predicted a Benn knockout inside eight rounds, noting that Garcia’s heart might be tested and that the champion could underestimate his opponent. However, Bellew acknowledged Garcia is in excellent shape.
Most other experts highlighted concerns about Benn’s ability to make the weight limit. Carl Frampton pointed out that Benn appeared to struggle during his last outing at catchweight against an injured Regis Prograis. Frampton predicted a comfortable victory for Garcia, citing Benn’s past tendency to quit in fights.
Barry Jones, a former super-featherweight champion, agreed that Garcia holds the advantage due to his speed, power, and patience. Jones forecasted a stoppage win for Garcia within five rounds, suggesting Benn’s aggressive pacing might lead him into a counter.
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum was even more blunt, predicting a first or second-round knockout. He expressed doubt that Benn could successfully shed the weight at his age, stating the fighter looked unrecognizable.
Former title challenger Paul Smith added that the outcome depends heavily on Garcia’s performance, suggesting a top-form Garcia could end the bout early.
DAZN commentator Adam Smith noted that while Benn is tenacious and fierce, the speed and skill gap at welterweight favors the champion on home soil.
Anthony Crolla and Josh Taylor both backed Garcia as well. Crolla described the bout as a massive step up in class for Benn, while Taylor predicted a stoppage within six rounds if Garcia maintains the right mindset, or a points loss for Benn if he survives longer.
Boxing Hall of Famer Kevin Iole labeled Benn a one-dimensional fighter, emphasizing that speed will be a decisive factor. Ade Oladipo of DAZN also selected Garcia, expecting a victory between rounds four and seven, though he anticipated an entertaining five to six rounds of action.
