Since completing his summer move to Barcelona, becoming only the second English player to join the Catalan giants on a permanent basis after Gary Lineker in 1986, Anthony Gordon has silenced critics and established himself as a key figure in Hansi Flick’s attack. The transfer initially drew scrutiny due to Gordon’s inconsistent Premier League statistics, which included just six league goals and two assists in 26 appearances for Newcastle, alongside their 12th-place finish in the previous season.
However, Gordon’s European record told a markedly different story. He scored 10 goals in 12 Champions League matches, a tally surpassed only by Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane. This form provided a glimpse of his potential during Newcastle’s Champions League last-16 exit against Barcelona, where the Magpies were convincingly defeated 8-3 on aggregate.
Barcelona sporting director Deco explicitly addressed the decision to sign Gordon over other targets, including Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford. “Our idea of play is much more linked to Anthony’s style fits with what the coach is looking for,” Deco explained, highlighting the tactical alignment between the player and the team.
Gordon has responded by settling in rapidly. “I feel at home already,” he said. “The city is amazing. The guys have made me feel so welcome. I think I will get better and better the longer I’m here.” Operating primarily from the left wing, he has introduced a new dynamic to Barcelona’s offense, using his pace and direct running to stretch defenses and create space for teammates like Lamine Yamal and Raphinha.
His selfless attitude was on full display during his league debut against Elche, where he provided two assists within a four-minute span. When presented with a one-on-one opportunity, Gordon opted to square the ball for Fermin Lopez rather than attempting to score himself. “You always want to win but it’s always about the team first,” Gordon noted after the match.
Barcelona have begun the season in emphatic fashion, netting 22 goals in their first five games—their most prolific start under Flick since he arrived in May 2024. Gordon’s willingness to press aggressively and isolate full-backs has been integral to this success, even though he is still seeking his first goal for the club. While questions remain about his ability to maintain this intensity over a full season, the narrative around the transfer has shifted from doubt to recognition of his growing importance to the team.
