North Korea Launches Ballistic Missiles Near Wonsan; Seoul Holds Emergency Meeting

South Korea’s military reported that North Korea launched multiple ballistic missiles into the sea near its eastern coastline early Saturday morning. The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) stated that the projectiles were detected around 5:20 a.m. local time from the Wonsan area and traveled approximately 250 kilometers (155 miles).

In response to the launches, South Korea’s presidential National Security Office convened an emergency security meeting involving the Ministry of Defense, the JCS, and other relevant agencies. Seoul is actively exchanging intelligence with the United States and Japan regarding the incident.

The launches occurred just one day after South Korea concluded five days of joint maritime drills with the US and Japan, which were specifically designed to counter North Korean threats. Shortly after those exercises began on Monday, North Korean Defense Minister Kim Song Gi condemned them and warned of “strong and reflective countermeasures from the standpoint of power.”

US Indo-Pacific Command assessed that the missile tests did not pose an immediate threat to US territory or its allies. A spokesperson reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to the defense of South Korea and other regional partners.

This incident follows a pattern of heightened tension between Pyongyang and Seoul-Washington forces. In August, North Korea fired a barrage of missiles despite overtures from US President Donald Trump, who had expressed plans to meet with Kim Jong Un. At that time, Trump had ordered a reduction in the scale of annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises, labeling them “inappropriate and hostile,” a move that alarmed US allies.

Additionally, late last month, North Korea criticized the planned Freedom Edge exercises in international waters off South Korea as a “threat” to the region. Pyongyang has historically characterized US-South Korea joint military drills as rehearsals for invasion and frequently stages missile tests in proximity to these exercises.

  1. The US says no immediate threat, but launching 250km into your own sea seems like posturing. Are they testing new tech or just sending a message?

  2. Is it just me, or does the timing keep getting more suspicious? They always strike right after US-South Korea exercises end.

  3. Just days after those drills? Pyongyang is escalating again. This cycle of tension feels exhausting for everyone in the region.
