Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson has acknowledged that his side must recover quickly following a comprehensive 6-0 defeat to West Ham United at the London Stadium. The loss is considered one of the most difficult moments of his tenure, which began when he took charge in July 2021 while the club competed in the National League.
West Ham, who sit atop the Championship table, dominated the contest with Jarrod Bowen opening the scoring with his sixth goal of the season. Joel Piroe, Konstantinos Mavropanos, Taty Castellanos, Mohamadou Kante, and Manor Solomon also found the net in a rampant display from the Hammers.
Parkinson emphasized the need for collective accountability, stating that both players and staff must take responsibility for the performance. “We’ve got to put the ingredients back in place very quickly to put in a better performance than we did tonight,” he said.
The manager noted that the team appeared to have a “soft centre” during the match, a vulnerability he believes must be addressed. He reflected on previous challenging periods throughout his time at the club, observing that while outsiders may perceive his tenure as straightforward, he has consistently faced setbacks. “From the outside the team can look a little lost. And then we’ve rediscovered what we’re all about as a side,” Parkinson explained.
He argued that Wrexham had shown greater defensive resilience in prior matches against stronger opposition. “Part of me, respecting that they are a good team, but there’s another part of me thinking we played Chelsea and Nottingham Forest, Coventry in the National League and Sheffield United and given a better account of ourselves in those games than we did tonight,” he added.
Parkinson pointed to the first 25 minutes as a phase where Wrexham created decent opportunities but ultimately failed due to basic defensive errors. He stressed that in the Championship, teams like West Ham will punish lapses in concentration. Calling for improved character and tenacity in key moments, the manager insisted that Wrexham must find a path back to competitiveness.
Parkinson saying they looked lost is bold. Hope he means it as motivation, not just criticism.
West Ham’s attack looks scary good. Can any Championship team stop them?
Chelsea and Forest games were much tighter than this. Where did that resilience go?
Six nil is brutal. Hope the lads can bounce back quickly for the next fixture.
