A North Carolina state highway patrol trooper has been charged with first-degree murder following the death of a county sheriff’s office captain. Grand jury proceedings on Tuesday resulted in the indictment of Nekime Matu Oxendine, 44, for the killing of Cumberland County Captain Adam Bean.
Bean was shot and killed on March 27 at a residence in Hope Mills. Authorities have described the incident as an apparent domestic dispute. Following the indictment, a judge ordered that Oxendine be held without bond while the legal case proceeds.
No bond held—finally some accountability. The legal system needs to show it treats everyone equally regardless of their badge.
How did this escalate to such an extreme outcome? Domestic disputes between officers are usually handled quietly, so what happened here?
