Two Private Spacecraft Demonstrate Precision Maneuverability in Orbit

Two privately operated spacecraft recently executed a high-precision rendezvous in low Earth orbit, highlighting emerging commercial capabilities in orbital mechanics. The Mira satellites, managed by the California-based startup Impulse Space, closed the distance to approximately 650 feet (200 meters) between each other, a maneuver the company states could serve a wide range of future customer needs.

“These types of dynamic, agile maneuvers are how we unlock full access to space after launch and create new mission possibilities,” Tom Mueller, founder and CEO of Impulse Space, said in a statement on Tuesday, September 8. Mueller, who was formerly the first employee hired by Elon Musk at SpaceX, added that the teams behind the Mira program are helping to pave the way for a new era in space operations, with benefits expected across multiple sectors.

The successful meeting involved two specific vehicles: LEO-3, which launched in November 2025, and LEO-2, which had launched earlier in January 2025 as part of the LEO Express missions. Mira is designed as an orbital transfer vehicle capable of delivering up to 660 pounds (300 kilograms) of payload to precise locations in orbit or beyond. The compact, dishwasher-sized craft demonstrated its agility through a series of carefully timed engine burns.

The operation began last February when LEO-2 initiated a prolonged propulsion burn to begin closing the gap with its counterpart. Throughout the spring and summer, additional smaller adjustments brought the two satellites into alignment. By July, LEO-2 executed a sequence of close approaches, starting from roughly 820 meters (2,690 feet) away and progressively moving nearer, ultimately reaching the final distance of about 200 meters.

Both satellites captured images of the event using onboard camera systems. The operation also involved collaboration with Starfish Space and HEO, two companies that assisted in orchestrating the orbital photography session. In a prior demonstration late last year, Impulse Space partnered with Starfish Space for a rendezvous known as Remora, where LEO-2 utilized Starfish navigation software to approach the original Mira satellite within 4,100 feet (1,250 meters).

Drew Damon, vice president of spacecraft programs at Impulse Space, emphasized that these events underscore the unique features of the Mira platform. “Twice now, we’ve demonstrated that Mira has the agility and propulsion to support a new class of dynamic operations on orbit,” Damon stated. “Our team is excited to continue tackling the mission sets Mira is uniquely qualified to handle.”

The push for advanced orbital maneuverability is not exclusive to the private sector. National governments are prioritizing similar technologies to service their own satellites and monitor adversary activities. For context, earlier this year, two Russian spacecraft were observed approaching within just 10 feet (3 meters) of each other in orbit.
