Families of victims, first responders, and political figures gathered on Friday for annual remembrance ceremonies at the sites of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The observances took place in New York City, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, marking a quarter-century since the events that claimed 2,977 lives at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
As Americans across the nation pause to reflect, an additional 9,000 individuals have passed away from illnesses linked to the attacks over the past 25 years.
At the National 9/11 Memorial & Museum in Manhattan, the traditional reading of the victims’ names is currently underway. The ceremony included two moments of silence to honor the specific timings of the crashes: the first at 8:46 a.m., commemorating the impact of American Airlines Flight 11 into the North Tower, and the second at 9:03 a.m., marking when United Airlines Flight 175 struck the South Tower.
Highlighting the ongoing political divisions within New York City, Mayor Zohran Mamdani shook hands with former mayor Rudy Giuliani prior to the start of the lower Manhattan service. The gesture followed public calls by Giuliani for the city’s first Muslim mayor to boycott the event.
Broadcasting coverage of the commemoration, ABC News is premiering “9/11 Tribute in Light: Live from Lower Manhattan,” a one-hour multiplatform special. The program airs Friday, September 11, at 8:00 p.m. EDT across ABC, Disney+, Hulu, National Geographic, ABC Owned Television Stations livestreams, and ABC News Live.
