Ismail Kartal abruptly resigned as head coach of Fenerbahce immediately following the club’s 1-1 draw with Roma in the UEFA Champions League. The decision was announced during a post-match press conference on September 10, 2026, coming just months after Kartal returned for his fourth stint as manager in June of that year.
Kartal, a club legend who made over 250 appearances as a player and won two league titles, cited the intense pressure of the role and a specific incident during the match where he was struck by a bottle thrown from the stands. He stated his intention to never return to the organization he previously served as an assistant coach, declaring that his resignation was made to pave the way for the club’s future.
However, Fenerbahce president Aziz Yildirim refused to accept the resignation. In an official statement, Yildirim asserted that Kartal remains the head coach, emphasizing that the club must support its manager. He confirmed that he had spoken with the 65-year-old coach and criticized both the media and certain supporters for creating an environment of hostility that included physical aggression toward the technical bench.
Yildirim also revealed that the spectator responsible for throwing the bottle has been identified and banned from the stadium. He urged the Fenerbahce community to uphold its values and show respect, stating, “You can’t show support by throwing punches at him like this.” The club reinforced its stance on social media, describing the situation as a family matter and insisting the coach would continue in his role.
The resignation announcement visibly shocked the squad, including English defender Archie Brown, who scored the 48th-minute equalizer against Bryan Cristante’s first-half opener. When informed of the news, Brown expressed disbelief, noting he had no prior knowledge of the coach’s decision to step down.
Fenerbahce currently sits ninth in the Turkish Super Lig with a record of two wins and two defeats. The team had recently returned to the Champions League for the first time in 18 years, making this sudden managerial change a significant development for the upcoming season.
