Republican and Democratic leaders in New Mexico have signed a letter urging major technology companies, specifically Apple and Google, to ensure the state remains represented in their digital services. The concern stems from recent updates to virtual assistant and mapping applications where users reported difficulties in locating or hearing references to New Mexico.
The bipartisan group argued that omitting the state from such ubiquitous digital tools undermines its visibility and could negatively impact tourism and economic opportunities. They emphasized that accurate representation in these platforms is essential for a state with a significant cultural and geographic footprint.
Lawmakers requested that both companies review their algorithms and data inputs to correct any errors or oversights that may have led to the state being excluded or inaccurately portrayed. The correspondence highlighted the importance of maintaining comprehensive and correct information for all U.S. states in the digital ecosystem.
