U.S. to Sanction ‘Large Bank’ in Iran Strategy, Bessent Confirms

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed on Thursday that the United States plans to impose sanctions on a significant financial institution on Monday, marking a key component of the administration’s ongoing strategy to curb Iranian influence.

Speaking during an appearance on “Real America’s Voice,” Bessent revealed that the timing of the action was deliberate, intended to coincide with the anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. “We’re going to do it on Monday because we want to honor the memory of our fallen citizens on 9/11,” he said. However, he did not disclose the specific name of the bank or the country in which it operates.

The anticipated move follows recent actions by the Trump administration, which has imposed a series of economic measures against Iran since the onset of the Middle East conflict in February. Last month, the administration escalated its pressure through “Operation Economic Outcast,” a campaign that sanctioned nearly 60 entities, vessels, and individuals. This initiative also expanded secondary sanctions on parties involved in business with Iran within critical sectors such as shipping and technology.

According to Bessent, the upcoming sanctions target Turkey’s largest bank, which authorities allege has been funneling funds to Iranian interests. This development builds on previous actions against Egyptian financial entities; earlier this year, the U.S. sanctioned the Dubai branches of Egypt’s second-largest bank, citing a $1.8 billion transfer of funds to Iran.

Bessent indicated that further details regarding the sanctioned institution would be made public on Monday.

  1. Choosing the September 11 anniversary for the announcement feels very calculated. Pure political theater to grab headlines.

  2. I’m curious how much damage this will actually do. Iran’s always found workarounds for these financial blocks over the years.

  3. Sanctioning Turkey’s largest bank is a huge escalation. This could severely strain NATO ally relations right when we need unity.
