French Father Sentenced to Six Months in Jail for Threatening Teacher

A man in France has been sentenced to six months in prison after he threatened to kill a female primary school teacher who had disciplined his son. The fast-track hearing took place in Toulouse on Thursday, just six days after the incident occurred in Le Fauga, a village located near the southwestern city of Toulouse.

The victim, whose identity is being protected, has been placed under official security and has taken sick leave. The incident has drawn strong condemnation from French Education Minister Edouard Geffray, who stated that attacking a teacher is an attack on the entire education system.

Geffray noted that this case will serve as one of the first applications of a new decree passed in July, which aims to protect school staff from significant safety risks posed by students or their families. Under these provisions, authorities can transfer a student to a different school if there is a substantial threat to staff welfare.

The threat originated from a disciplinary incident on a previous Friday. According to Le Fauga Mayor Jean-Marie Puig, the teacher had moved the disruptive boy to another classroom. There, the child was allegedly told to stop “acting like a little bully” by the second teacher. When the father arrived at the school, he reportedly threatened to decapitate the educator, adding that he would have done so if she had been a man.

Although the parent subsequently issued an apology, a judicial complaint was filed, leading to his prosecution. Following the threat, teachers in Le Fauga refused to return to work on Monday. The case has also resonated with the tragic murder of Samuel Paty, a teacher who was beheaded in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine six years ago.

Toulouse education chief Karim Benmiloud confirmed that the father had been summoned to the school for a meeting regarding his son’s behavior. It is currently believed that the boy and his younger sister may be transferred to a school outside of Le Fauga.
