The European Space Agency (ESA) is accelerating development of its robotic Venus mission following a decision by NASA to step back from its role in providing a key radar instrument. According to the mission’s project scientist, the agency is moving “full steam ahead” with the endeavor on its own.
Named Envision, the European orbiter is designed to map the Venusian surface at a resolution ten times higher than previous radar missions conducted by NASA in the 1990s. Because Venus is shrouded in thick clouds of sulfuric acid that block optical cameras, radar remains the most effective tool for penetrating the atmosphere to reveal the terrain below. Scientists intend to use the mission to search for evidence of active volcanism.
The partnership between the two space agencies was originally formalized in a 2024 memorandum of understanding. Under that agreement, NASA was slated to supply the primary synthetic aperture radar, along with tracking and communications support via its Deep Space Network. In return, ESA agreed to include US researchers on the Envision science team.
Europe will continue to build the spacecraft and the remaining science instruments, while the mission is scheduled to launch aboard an Ariane 6 rocket.
I hope they find active volcanoes. That would be a huge discovery for planetary science.
Why did NASA pull out? It would have been great to see US instruments back on Venus.
Finally, Europe shows it can do deep space exploration on its own terms.
Going it alone is bold. I wonder if ESA can deliver the radar specs without NASA’s help.
