Canada and Ukraine formalized a historic diplomatic commitment on Thursday, signing a declaration that pledges to maintain a bilateral partnership spanning the next century. The agreement was reached during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to Canada, where he held talks with Prime Minister Mark Carney and other senior officials.
A central component of the visit was the announcement of a new security package aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s air defenses. Prime Minister Carney confirmed that Canada has finalized an agreement to supply critical air defense interceptors through the United States Jumpstart mechanism. The delivery is valued at approximately 350 million Canadian dollars, equivalent to roughly $260 million USD or €218 million.
Highlighting the scale of Ottawa’s ongoing assistance, Carney noted that Canada has already provided nearly 26 billion Canadian dollars ($19 billion USD) in support since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion. “We’ve provided support for the energy systems and beyond. We’ll provide more support,” the prime minister stated.
Zelenskyy expressed his appreciation for the new shipment, describing it as a “very important” and “crucial” package for protecting Ukrainian skies. The Ukrainian leader is currently undertaking a series of international visits to secure military aid and diplomatic backing. He also indicated a desire to meet with US President Donald Trump before the end of September to further discuss defense support.
On the battlefield, recent nights have seen intensified activity. Zelenskyy reported that Ukrainian forces struck an oil refinery in Russia’s Yamalo-Nenets region and a seaport in Dagestan, alongside other sites vital to Moscow’s war industry. In response, Russian defenses claimed to have shot down 448 drones overnight. Meanwhile, Russian attacks on Dnipro killed at least two people at a food production facility, and a drone strike on a cargo ship in the Odesa region resulted in the deaths of two Azerbaijani crew members, with Ukraine attributing the attack to Russia.
