The Metropolitan Police confirmed that two individuals have been taken into custody in London on suspicion of assisting a foreign intelligence service, specifically identified as Iran’s.
Authorities arrested a 60-year-old man and a 42-year-old woman at residential properties across the capital on Wednesday. The arrests are part of an ongoing inquiry into alleged violations of the National Security Act.
Both suspects were released on bail subject to strict conditions while the investigation continues. Police clarified that the operation was not linked to the series of incidents targeting Jewish and Iranian communities that occurred in London earlier this year.
The arrests followed two separate search operations conducted at properties in north and north-west London back in June.
Commander Helen Flanagan, who leads Counter Terrorism Policing London, acknowledged that news of the detentions might worry some members of the public. However, she emphasized that she does not perceive an immediate threat to the wider community.
Flanagan noted a significant rise in national security operations over the last year related to state threats. She described the current investigation as a continuation of that broader effort, adding that police will act decisively whenever activity is suspected to threaten UK safety.
Another reminder that espionage isn’t just Hollywood fiction. Hope authorities share more details soon so the public stays informed.
Relieved to hear there is no imminent threat. It is unsettling but good the police are proactive about national security.
