Yemen’s Houthi insurgents have announced the capture of the strategic port city of Mocha, intensifying their campaign to dominate the nation’s coastline along the Red Sea. This development represents the most substantial military advance against the US- and Saudi-backed government in recent years.
The potential loss of this coastal territory would constitute a major strategic setback for Washington and Riyadh. It would bring Iran and its regional allies closer to establishing complete control over two critical maritime chokepoints that serve as vital arteries for western shipping: the Bab al-Mandeb strait at the southern entrance to the Red Sea, and the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf.
