Tilda Swinton is set to return to the stage in a revival of Manfred Karge’s seminal 1980s production, Man to Man, at London’s Royal Court Theatre. The controversial one-woman play, which premiered in 1986, has been long recognized as a striking examination of identity and resilience within a fractured society.
The narrative centers on Ella, a working-class woman who adopts the persona of her deceased husband, Max, as a means of survival during the 12 years of Nazi domination. Director and playwright Manfred Karge, who originally conceptualized the work, extends the scope beyond the Third Reich to encompass the subsequent division of Germany into communist and capitalist states, as well as the complexities of post-war reconstruction.
Pierre Audi, the late founder of the Almeida Theatre, famously distributed copies of the script in 1986, describing the piece as a vital study of female endurance in a terrifying world. The production remains a significant cultural touchstone, noted for its bracing portrait of a divided individual navigating a divided culture.
