Zelenskyy Arrives in Canada to Seek Air Defenses and Winter Aid

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Calgary on Wednesday evening for high-level discussions with Canadian leadership, including Prime Minister Mark Carney. The visit is part of a broader diplomatic tour aimed at securing enhanced air defenses and critical aid as Ukraine prepares for the upcoming winter season.

Zelenskyy and his wife, Olena, landed in Canada in the early hours of Thursday, having previously traveled to Norway to attend the funeral of King Harald V. The trip to Scandinavia was marked by tension, as Norway’s prime minister reported that a drone nearly struck the presidential aircraft during its approach.

Highlighting the urgency of his mission, Zelenskyy stated on social media that the primary objective of the visit is to bolster protections for Ukrainian skies and ensure readiness for the cold months ahead. Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022, Moscow has systematically intensified attacks on Ukraine’s energy and heating infrastructure during autumn and winter.

Prime Minister Carney affirmed Canada’s continued support in a statement, noting that the discussions would focus on deepening cooperation in defense, economic, and energy sectors. “Canada remains steadfast in our commitment to support Ukraine’s defense, recovery, and reconstruction,” Carney said.

The diplomatic push also includes plans for Zelenskyy to meet with US President Donald Trump before the end of September to discuss ongoing support. Meanwhile, military engagement on the ground remains fierce. Zelenskyy reported that Ukrainian forces struck a Russian oil refinery in the Yamalo-Nenets region and a seaport in Dagestan overnight, along with other sites vital to Russia’s war industry. In response, Russian authorities stated that 448 Ukrainian drones were shot down overnight, though they confirmed that drone debris killed one woman in the Voronezh region.
