Paul Nowak, the general secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), has issued a stark warning to Prime Minister Andy Burnham, urging an immediate overhaul of Immigration Secretary Shabana Mahmood’s migration reforms. Nowak cautioned that the current trajectory risks overstretching the social care system and inadvertently fueling far-right sentiment across the country.
Speaking in advance of the TUC’s annual congress scheduled to take place in Brighton next week, Nowak acknowledged the “sense of optimism” surrounding the newly formed government. However, he stressed that this positive momentum must be matched with decisive action on critical issues, particularly regarding migration policy and the ongoing cost of living crisis.
