Pennsylvania Democrat Fetterman Makes Surprise Appearance at RNC Midterm Convention

Democratic Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania broke with his party’s norms on Wednesday by appearing in a prerecorded video at the Republican National Committee’s midterm convention in Dallas. The appearance highlights Fetterman’s growing detachment from the Democratic Party as he continues to align with conservative positions on key issues.

Speaking from Western Pennsylvania’s Mon Valley Works steel mill, Fetterman introduced his political opponent, GOP Senator Dave McCormick. “Why am I here talking to you today? Because, well, I’m a common-sense Democrat,” Fetterman said in the one-minute clip. He added that he would always stand with America and reject what he described as the extremes of socialism.

Fetterman explicitly pledged to collaborate with President Donald Trump to defend the steel industry in the region, stating, “We’ll work with President Trump to fight and defend the steel way of life right here in the Steel Valley.”

McCormick praised the surprise endorsement after Fetterman’s video concluded, calling the Democrat a friend and commending his courage. The footage was broadcast on screens at the American Airlines Center, where the convention was held.

The senator’s remarks come amid ongoing debates over the future of U.S. Steel. Last year, President Trump approved the acquisition of the Pittsburgh-based company by Japan’s Nippon Steel, a deal that had faced opposition from both parties initially. Trump eventually signed the agreement, arguing it would bring tens of billions in investment and grant the federal government a so-called golden share in the corporation.

Fetterman has frequently criticized mainstream Democratic leadership, most notably backing Trump’s approach to Iran and opposing party strategy during the government shutdown fight last year. Following Trump’s 2024 electoral victory, Fetterman became the first Democratic senator to meet with the incoming president at Mar-a-Lago.

Despite the crossover appeal, Fetterman has denied plans to leave the Democratic Party. In a May op-ed, he wrote that he would make a “terrible Republican” due to his continued voting alignment with Democrats, though he warned that his red line would be crossed if the party becomes anti-Israel.

Any formal party switch by Fetterman would significantly impact the Senate balance of power. Democrats currently need to gain four seats to reclaim majority control in November’s midterms.
