Billy Joel Undergoes Brain Surgery for Hydrocephalus, Reports Improvement

Seven-time Grammy winner Billy Joel has shared that he is recovering well after undergoing brain surgery to relieve symptoms associated with normal pressure hydrocephalus, a condition diagnosed in 2025. Speaking on SiriusXM’s dedicated channel on Wednesday, the 77-year-old musician explained that the procedure followed a period of significant physical instability.

Joel first revealed his diagnosis in May 2025, describing a disorder where cerebrospinal fluid accumulates within the skull and exerts pressure on the brain. The revelation led to the cancellation of several concerts, with medical professionals advising him to refrain from performing until he had fully recovered.

Although the singer made a brief public appearance in January this year, performing two tracks alongside a tribute band, his doctors have continued to caution against excessive physical stress. His neurologist recommended the implantation of a shunt after assessing the possibility that his condition could deteriorate.

Joel admitted that he was initially hesitant to undergo a procedure involving drilling into his skull. However, after researching the potential benefits, he concluded that the surgery could aid both his balance and cognitive function. “I don’t want to lose my marbles,” Joel said. “It’s hard to tell what’s your age and what’s a condition.”

Following the implantation, Joel reported noticeable improvements in his memory, balance, and overall daily functioning. He also noted that the loud volume inherent to his rock performances may have been contributing to concussion-like symptoms. “I’m ok. I want people to know, don’t worry about me. I’m still here,” he assured his fans.
