Blizzard Workers Ratify First Union Contracts in Historic Deal

Workers at Blizzard Entertainment represented by the Communications Workers of America (CWA) have officially voted to ratify their inaugural union contracts with the company. The agreement, reached after approximately two years of negotiations, encompasses roughly 1,900 employees, including those already affiliated with the CWA.

Key provisions in the contract include wage increases, formal grievance procedures, and a hybrid work schedule requiring employees to be in the office three days per week. Additional protections feature “just cause” standards for discipline, remote work and disability accommodations, and a guaranteed four weeks of severance pay regardless of tenure. The deal also mandates that Blizzard discuss, evaluate, and bargain over the implementation of artificial intelligence in the workplace.

A significant component of the agreement is a recall right, allowing laid-off workers to be considered for open positions within any Blizzard bargaining unit for 14 months following the announcement of their layoff. This provision addresses a critical concern in the gaming industry, which has experienced substantial job cuts recently, including layoffs announced by Microsoft, Blizzard’s parent company, and its Xbox division.

Simon Hedrick, a Quality Analyst and member of the Overwatch bargaining committee, emphasized the broader impact of the deal. “I believe that the positive change we have won will ripple out and help make the games industry as a whole a better place for workers and players alike,” Hedrick said. “This contract is the start of something greater, and I urge everyone to remember: when we fight together, we win together.”

Blizzard has seen multiple efforts toward unionization over the years, primarily through the CWA. Workers from major titles such as World of Warcraft, Overwatch, Diablo, Hearthstone, and Warcraft Rumble have made progress in organizing. Additionally, members of the Platform & Technology, Story and Franchise Development, and Quality Assurance units have achieved similar milestones in their push for collective representation.

  1. The AI bargaining clause is brilliant. As a QA tester, I worry automation will replace my job without consultation. Glad this is covered.

  2. Is this really historic, or just the first layer? Wonder how many other Blizzard teams are still resisting unionization efforts right now?

  3. I’m surprised by the three-day office requirement. Didn’t expect a union contract to mandate hybrid work instead of fully remote options.

  4. Great news! Finally, some real protections for workers in an industry known for crunch culture. This sets a much-needed precedent.
