Nintendo has officially announced a new installment in the 2D Metroid franchise, titled Metroid: Ravenous, designed specifically for the upcoming Switch 2 console. The game is scheduled for release on January 28, 2027.
The title appears to build upon the foundation laid by Metroid Dread, maintaining the series’ traditional side-scrolling gameplay while upgrading to 3D graphics. The announcement highlights several new features, including dynamic cinematic camera angles, combat mechanics that allow Samus Aran to parry enemies, and enhanced Morph Ball movement.
A key gameplay element introduced in the reveal is a survival mechanic where Samus must absorb energy from defeated foes. Reflecting this new twist, Nintendo’s promotional materials describe the stakes with the phrase “eat or be eaten.” The announcement also showcased a variety of challenging adversaries, ranging from massive creatures to a squad of futuristic, caped warriors.
