In a series of executive orders released on Tuesday, President Donald Trump asserted that “Canada is discriminating in fact against the commerce of the United States,” citing the need for the prohibitions.
Earlier the same day, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed the escalating trade dispute in a video statement. He acknowledged that Canada’s strategic shift away from the US, historically its largest trading partner, would entail significant economic challenges.
While officials from both nations have expressed a desire to reach an agreement, no further negotiations have been arranged following the collapse of talks in late August. The imposition of these bans marks a significant escalation in the ongoing trade war between the two neighbors.
