Burning fossil fuels releases both carbon dioxide, which traps heat, and sulphur dioxide, which forms reflective particles known as aerosols. These aerosols act like dust on a greenhouse window, bouncing sunlight back into space and partially offsetting global warming. Over the past few decades, strict clean-air policies in Europe, North America, and China have significantly reduced sulphur emissions. Because these particles only remain in the atmosphere for days or weeks, their cooling influence vanishes almost immediately once emissions drop.
Professor Reto Knutti of ETH Zurich, a former coordinating lead author for the IPCC, notes that after accounting for natural fluctuations like El Niño, the underlying rate of warming has clearly accelerated.
