Sabalenka Survives Thriller to Reach US Open Semis

Aryna Sabalenka nearly saw her US Open title defence end before mounting a remarkable comeback to defeat Linda Noskova and advance to the semi-finals. The two-time defending champion was pushed to a deciding set, trailing 4-2 in the third set and 2-0 in the tie-break, before securing a 7-6 (7-1) 3-6 7-6 (10-7) victory in just under two and a half hours.

The 28-year-old’s 19th consecutive win at Flushing Meadows extends a streak dating back to the 2023 final. She becomes the first woman since Serena Williams in 2016 to reach six successive semi-finals at the US Open.

Sabalenka temporarily retains her world number one ranking, though she will lose the top spot if second-ranked Elena Rybakina defeats Zheng Qinwen on Wednesday, regardless of Sabalenka’s own result.

Speaking after the match, Sabalenka admitted she believed the contest was lost. “I honestly thought that that’s it, the match is over, but probably that’s what helped me to feel loose and go after my shots,” she said. “I’m speechless right now. I was pushing to the limit in this match, especially in the third set. I’m super happy to get the win.”

The Belarusian, who has a history of emotional struggles on court, displayed composure reminiscent of her previous quarter-final victory over Taylor Townsend. She will now face either American third seed Jessica Pegula or 26th-seeded compatriot Emma Navarro.

Noskova, who hit more winners and saved seven of nine break points, saw her run of 11 consecutive Grand Slam singles wins come to an end.
