A pensioner from Stenhousemuir has been sentenced to four years in prison for possessing what police describe as the largest hoard of child sexual abuse material ever seized in Scotland. Alan MacPherson, 83, was found guilty after a raid on his home in 2025 uncovered electronic devices containing more than 805,000 identified images of child abuse, with the total collection exceeding two million files.
Speaking at Falkirk Sheriff Court, Sheriff Mayram Labaki condemned the scale of the offenses as “exceptional.” The sheriff noted that the volume of material was so vast that forensic examiners were unable to fully examine and categorize a substantial proportion of it. “Every image records the abuse or exploitation of a child,” Labaki stated. “The possession and circulation of such material perpetuates that abuse.”
MacPherson admitted to downloading the material over a 14-year period for personal gratification. During police interviews, he confessed to searching for indecent images of children online for years. The investigation began in July 2025 when officers identified his IP address being used to distribute such material. Although MacPherson used an anonymous messaging app, investigators traced the activity back to his residence.
Prosecutor Rachel Wallace revealed that during an undercover chat, MacPherson shared multiple images classified in the most serious category. The victims were predominantly girls aged between nine and 15, though at least one child may have been as young as seven. Wallace told the court that authorities believe this constitutes the largest collection of its kind encountered by Police Scotland.
The court heard that nine devices, including computers, phones, and external drives, were seized, with child abuse material found on all of them. Five devices underwent full examination, while nearly 1.4 million ungraded images remained on one device due to the sheer extent of the collection.
Sheriff Labaki criticized MacPherson’s lack of remorse, citing social work reports in which he claimed the children were willing participants. “Your views towards your offending and your victims are unconscionable,” the sheriff said. “Your attitude is unremorseful.”
MacPherson’s defense solicitor, Stephen Biggam, highlighted that his client suffers from macular degeneration and would “steadily lose his eyesight.” Biggam argued this condition mitigates any future risk. However, the court was also told that MacPherson’s wife has served him with divorce papers while he is in custody, and his son has cut ties with him.
The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, where MacPherson previously served as an honorary archivist, expressed shock and appall at the revelations. A spokesperson emphasized the organization’s commitment to safeguarding and confirmed that any concerns regarding his past involvement are treated seriously and referred to authorities as necessary.
In addition to his prison sentence, MacPherson has been placed on the sex offenders register for life and will be subject to supervision for three years following his release.
