A recent investigation by YouTube channel Gamers Nexus has uncovered that LG smart televisions are persistently collecting and transmitting user data, regardless of whether the device is offline or in standby mode. The findings indicate that these smart TVs actively scan surrounding Wi-Fi networks to identify nearby devices, capture audio logs via built-in microphones, and employ audio-video sampling techniques to determine exactly what content is being viewed across all input sources.
The inquiry was a collaborative effort involving fellow YouTubers from Level1Techs and independent security researchers. By testing retail models of LG OLED sets, the team utilized packet captures to document the television’s network activity. The data revealed that the TVs were scanning the local area network for connected hardware, raising significant privacy concerns regarding the extent of surveillance occurring within consumers’ homes.
Does this apply to all LG models or just the OLEDs? I have the mid-range one and am getting worried.
