UK Faces Diplomatic Fury After Announcing Settlement Trade Ban

The United Kingdom is preparing to impose a trade ban on goods originating from Israeli settlements in the West Bank, a move described as a significant hardening of its stance toward Jerusalem. The initiative, which aims to reinforce British support for Palestinian rights and the two-state solution, has provoked immediate and intense backlash from multiple quarters.

Israeli ministers have responded with anger, threatening concrete retaliation against the policy shift. Gideon Saar, Israel’s foreign minister, issued a stark warning that if Britain acts against Israeli interests, Israel will reciprocate. He called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to formally recognize Argentine sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, which Israel refers to as the Malvinas, and to impose sanctions on the UK until British troops withdraw from the territory.

Saar accused the British of not only occupying the islands but also engaging in oil drilling and appropriating resources. “We will not be a doormat trampled by an antisemitic government,” he stated, characterizing the UK as a nation struggling with economic and social decline that is resorting to hostility toward Jews and the State of Israel. He further demanded the immediate expulsion of the British ambassador.

The announcement has also drawn criticism from within the UK itself, with members of Parliament challenging the government’s approach. Meanwhile, the United States has expressed dismay at the decision, adding to the diplomatic pressure on the Labour government as it attempts to reassert its commitment to a two-state resolution.
