A series of Houthi attacks targeting Saudi Arabia on Tuesday injured at least 73 people and triggered fires at multiple oil and utility facilities in the kingdom’s southern region. The strikes represent a major intensification of hostilities between the Iranian-backed Yemeni rebels and Riyadh, shattering a fragile four-year truce that had ended direct fighting in the Yemen civil war.
Saudi officials confirmed that the attacks struck civilian and economic sites in the cities of Abha, Jazan, Najran, and Khamis Mushait. Maj. Gen. Turki al-Malki, a spokesperson for the Saudi-led coalition, stated that the casualties included women and children. Following the assaults, operations at several energy installations were temporarily suspended while firefighters battled the blazes.
The southern region is home to critical energy infrastructure, including a major refinery in Jazan with a daily capacity of 400,000 barrels. The Houthis have previously targeted the Abha airport, and their latest claims of responsibility indicate a broadening of their strike capabilities.
In a prerecorded address, Houthi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree announced that the rebels had launched dozens of ballistic missiles and drones at facilities in Jazan City for Primary and Downstream Industries, as well as Aramco sites in Najran and Abha. He also reported strikes on King Khalid Air Base in Khamis Mushait, blaming Saudi aggression for the renewed violence.
Al-Malki condemned the actions as a “flagrant violation” of Saudi sovereignty and vowed that the coalition would take “all necessary operational measures” to deter what he described as terrorist activities. The escalation comes against a backdrop of heightened regional tension, with shipping through the Strait of Hormuz nearly halted due to the Iran war and the Bab al-Mandeb strait increasingly threatened by Houthi operations.
The conflict has already caused significant humanitarian distress within Yemen. According to the International Organisation for Migration, approximately 18,500 people have been displaced in the provinces of Taiz and Hodeida. IOM official Abdusattor Esoev noted that many displaced families are arriving with no resources, adding to the plight of those who have been forced from their homes multiple times since the war began in 2014.
The humanitarian crisis for displaced Yemenis is awful, but we need to understand why the Houthis feel this escalation is necessary now.
