Hungary Leads EU in Longest Commutes, Czechia in Shortest

According to the latest data from Eurofound, Hungary’s workforce endures the most extensive daily journeys to and from work within the European Union. The agency’s Working Life Surveys indicate that the average commuter in Hungary spends approximately 18 minutes traveling each way.

In stark contrast, employees in the Czech Republic benefit from the shortest transit times across the bloc. On average, workers there travel just 13 minutes to reach their places of employment, marking a significant difference from their eastern neighbors.

Eurofound attributes Hungary’s longer commute durations primarily to the high cost of housing in its capital city, Budapest. This financial pressure frequently forces residents to choose more affordable living arrangements further from urban centers, thereby increasing their travel time.

Other nations with notably lengthy commutes include Romania and Croatia, where the average trip is around 17 minutes. Meanwhile, Luxembourg stands out with an average commute of just 14 minutes, making it one of the fastest countries for workers to reach their jobs.
