At least two individuals were killed and seven others injured during Russian airstrikes on Kyiv on Tuesday morning, according to city authorities. The attacks marked the immediate resumption of bombardments following a three-day pause that was orchestrated while President Trump’s envoys, Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, held separate negotiations with Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Russia’s state news agency, TASS, confirmed that the truce had ended. Residents in the Ukrainian capital reported strong explosions across the city. Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated that a five-story apartment building in the Solomianskyi district was damaged and that vehicles were on fire in the Podilskyi district. Authorities also confirmed that residents were trapped inside a residential structure.
The conflict has spilled over into neighboring airspace, prompting Poland to take defensive action. The Polish Air Force announced it was conducting “preventive operations” in response to Russian missile activity, which resulted in the suspension of flights from Lublin Airport.
The diplomatic mission began in Moscow before moving to Kyiv on Sunday. Prior to their departure, President Trump expressed optimism to reporters, stating that the envoys carried an “idea for peace” and suggesting there was “a good chance” of resolving the conflict that has persisted for more than four and a half years.
Following the Kyiv meeting, Witkoff described the conversations as “meaningful,” “substantive,” and “important,” though he acknowledged that both nations would need to make compromises to achieve a settlement. A senior Ukrainian official, speaking on condition of anonymity, indicated that discussions focused heavily on logistical challenges, specifically how to survive the coming winter.
In Moscow, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov noted that the American team had come with serious preparations and formulated various ideas for a potential settlement, though he did not provide further details.
