Concerns over the safety of students have led to the installation of barbed-wire fencing around a school in the occupied West Bank, following a dramatic rise in violence by Israeli settlers.
The village of al-Mughayyir, situated northeast of Ramallah, has seen its perimeter increasingly crowded with unauthorized Jewish settler outposts. Israeli forces also regularly deploy temporary checkpoints at the village entrance, further isolating the community.
According to local reports, six individuals have been killed in al-Mughayyir this year as part of a sharp increase in settler-related aggression against Palestinians. Among the fatalities was Aws al-Naasan, a 14-year-old student who was shot dead by a settler in April near the school gates.
The killing of the teenager underscores the heightened anxiety among Palestinian parents, who fear for their children’s lives on a daily basis.
While all Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are considered illegal under international law, many of the small, ad-hoc outposts that have sprung up around al-Mughayyir are also in violation of Israeli domestic law.
