Russia resumed missile and drone strikes on Kyiv late Monday after a three-day halt ordered by President Vladimir Putin expired. The temporary pause coincided with visits to Moscow and Kyiv by US President Donald Trump’s envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who were conducting talks aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.
Ukraine’s State Emergency Service reported that Russian forces targeted the Boryspil and Fastiv districts. The Kyiv city military administration declared an air raid alert, urging residents to seek shelter as strong explosions echoed through the capital and triggered car alarms in the city center. Russia’s state news agency TASS confirmed that the strike suspension had ended.
In a separate development, Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko submitted his resignation on Monday, describing the move as a conscious political decision. Kravchenko stated on Telegram that he did not want the office to be used as an instrument of political confrontation, though he did not elaborate further. His resignation marks the latest sign of disunity within Ukraine’s senior leadership.
Meanwhile, Hollywood actress and UN special envoy for refugees Angelina Jolie made a surprise visit to the heavily-shelled northeastern city of Kharkiv. Accompanied by her son Knox, Jolie visited the Spadkoyemets boxing club, where Knox participated in a Muay Thai training session alongside Ukrainian defenders, according to the Boxing Federation of Ukraine.
Additionally, reports indicated that a Ukrainian drone attack struck civilian infrastructure in the Russian city of Saratov on the Volga River, injuring several people. Regional governor Roman Busargin confirmed the incident on Telegram. The region hosts significant industrial facilities, including a major Rosneft oil refinery.
Witkoff has touted progress in discussions with both Ukrainian and Russian officials, raising the prospect of reviving three-way peace negotiations to resolve the ongoing conflict.
