Jim McGuinness has agreed to extend his stay as Donegal senior football manager for the 2027 season, marking his fourth year in charge during his second spell with the Ulster county.
Alongside him, Mickey McCann will continue leading the senior hurling team for an additional two years. McCann has held the position since 2018.
Donegal GAA announced the decisions on social media following a County Committee meeting on Monday evening. The club stated they confirmed the appointment of Michael McCann as Senior Hurling Manager for a two-year term and Jim McGuinness as Senior Football Manager for a one-year term.
During his current tenure, McGuinness has guided Donegal to consecutive Ulster championships in 2024 and 2025, as well as reaching the All-Ireland final in 2025. Earlier this year, in March, the 53-year-old led the county to victory in the Football League Division One final against Kerry.
Despite these successes, the championship campaign ended in disappointment. Donegal were eliminated from the Ulster SFC quarter-finals by Down and suffered a extra-time defeat to Dublin in Round 3 of the All-Ireland series.
McGuinness, who previously managed the county to an All-Ireland title in 2012, initially returned on a three-year contract that included an option for a fourth year.
But will they go one better now? The All-Ireland heartbreak must sting after that 2025 run.
Another year of stability is exactly what Donegal needs. Consistency breeds success.
