The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed it is conducting an internal inquiry into matters of “discipline and conduct” as the team endures a difficult tour of England. The investigation follows a period marked by significant turmoil, during which Pakistan lost the first two matches of their three-Test series.
The team has undergone substantial changes recently. Last week, the PCB recalled seven players and replaced head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed with New Zealand’s Mike Hesson. The decision to drop seven players from the original touring party was explained by Hesson as being driven by a need to overhaul the bowling attack for the final Test, although three experienced batters—Salman Ali Agha, Imam-ul-Haq, and Mohammad Rizwan—were removed prior to his arrival.
Tensions escalated during the second Test at Lord’s when the Pakistani side threatened to abandon the match and potentially the entire tour. The dispute arose following a Sky Sports interview featuring Imran Khan, the former prime minister and cricket captain who is currently imprisoned.
In a statement released on Monday, the PCB addressed the ongoing situation, referring to circulating stories as “speculative reports” from “hostile external sources.” The board emphasized that the inquiry is being handled according to standard regulations and that all individuals involved are being given due consideration.
Hesson previously refuted claims that the call-up of Mohammad Imran and Mohammad Imran Jr was the result of administrative confusion over their similar names. He also dismissed suggestions that Salman Ali Agha had refused to attend a meeting with King Charles at Clarence House.
Meanwhile, new fast-bowling coach Ashley Noffke, who replaced Umar Gul, stated he remains outside the decision-making process regarding the disciplinary matter. Speaking at Edgbaston ahead of Wednesday’s final Test, Noffke noted that issues of this nature are common when coaching in Pakistan and are often beyond the control of the playing staff.
Seven players dropped seems drastic for just one series loss. Makes you wonder if there’s more to this than meets the eye.
Threatening to quit a tour over a TV interview is completely unprofessional. The PCB needs strong leadership here.
