MIT Study Proposes Satellite Sensors to Detect Hidden Nuclear Weapons in Orbit

More than six decades after the United States and the Soviet Union signed the Outer Space Treaty, which prohibits placing nuclear weapons in Earth’s orbit, a new proposal from an MIT physicist offers a potential solution to one of the treaty’s most persistent challenges: verification. A recent feasibility study by physicist Areg Danagoulian outlines a method for detecting nuclear material aboard spacecraft using satellite-based sensors.

Published findings suggest that a detector, roughly the size of an encyclopedia, could identify the neutron signatures produced when high-energy protons trapped by Earth’s magnetic field interact with radioactive elements like uranium. According to the study’s calculations, such a device could detect a warhead from approximately 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) away after about a week of observation, with detection times decreasing significantly at closer ranges.

The consequences of a nuclear detonation in space remain severe. Historical precedents like the 1962 Starfish Prime test, where the U.S. detonated a 1.45-megaton warhead 250 miles above the Pacific, demonstrated the destructive potential of such weapons. The blast disrupted communications, created artificial auroras visible from Hawaii, and damaged or destroyed eight satellites, while radiation lingered in orbit for years. The Soviet Union conducted similar high-altitude tests under Project K, causing ground-level disruptions in Kazakhstan.

While the technical feasibility of detection has been studied, experts warn that political and diplomatic hurdles are substantial. Thomas González Roberts, an assistant professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology, noted that maintaining close proximity to another satellite for extended periods could be interpreted as espionage or aggression, potentially escalating tensions.

Brian Weeden, director of civil and commercial policy for the Center for Space Policy and Strategy at Aerospace Corp, emphasized that policy challenges often outweigh technical ones.
