Bermann suggested that the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party’s recent breakthrough in the Saxony-Anhalt regional election should be viewed as a symptom of a larger transformation in European politics rather than a singular electoral anomaly in Germany. She noted that political positions once considered outside the mainstream have been normalized, a trend accelerated by victories such as Brexit and Donald Trump’s rise to power.
According to the former diplomat, successive economic and geopolitical crises have further eroded public confidence in established political parties, creating fertile ground for populist movements to gain traction throughout Europe.
