A cargo aircraft collision at Miami International Airport has resulted in five fatalities and multiple injuries, according to reports. The incident occurred Sunday afternoon when an Amazon Prime flight, identified as Prime Air Flight 7598, departed from San Juan, Puerto Rico, and overran the runway while attempting to land around 2 p.m. ET. The plane subsequently crashed into vehicles on the ground.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the details of the crash. Officials have stated that it is currently unknown whether the individuals killed or injured were aboard the aircraft or located on the ground at the time of the impact. The National Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
NPR’s Arezou Rezvani noted that such investigations are typically lengthy, as crashes often stem from a combination of mechanical failures, flight crew performance, and weather conditions. Rezvani highlighted that while many airports have installed Engineered Materials Arresting Systems—crushable materials designed to stop planes that overshoot runways—Miami International Airport does not utilize this safety feature due to its longer runway lengths, making this particular incident more unusual.
