Hundreds of demonstrators gathered over the weekend for coordinated anti-migrant protests in two English towns, an operation traced back to a single local campaigner and a series of questionable choices by border authorities.
Danny Thomas, widely known as Danny Tommo and originally from Hayling Island near Portsmouth, orchestrated both events after what witnesses described as weeks of planning throughout the summer. The coordinated actions saw masked individuals block roads in Dover on Saturday, followed by protesters attempting to halt migrant transport coaches in Portsmouth on Sunday.
The link between the two protests became clear when Border Force officials decided to direct a vessel carrying migrants to the Eastney landing stage on Sunday. The location was the same terminal where passenger ferries depart for Thomas’s home island. Whether this decision resulted from a lack of awareness or administrative error, it provided Thomas with an immediate local platform to activate his network through social media channels late on Sunday evening.
Thomas, who describes himself as a Christian and has been vocal about his opposition to migration, first attracted legal trouble in 2016 when he received a two-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to attempted kidnapping involving a knife. Following his release, he became closely associated with anti-migration and anti-Muslim activist Tommy Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon. While their relationship appears to have cooled, Robinson publicly endorsed this weekend’s demonstrations.
Over the past year, Thomas has produced videos documenting his harassment of migrants on French beaches, distributing the footage across social media platforms. In July, he launched a movement called Patriot Platform, which characterizes itself as a organization driven by patriotic citizens seeking to reclaim national sovereignty. The group’s website states its members are bonded by love of country rather than hatred of others.
In recorded messages posted recently, Thomas addressed gatherings of supporters, describing upcoming actions as part of a disciplined strategy that would generate momentum nationwide. He cautioned participants against creating violent movements that would result in arrests, instead advocating for strategic disruption modeled after tactics used by environmental protest groups.
Kent Police initially described the Dover demonstration as spontaneous but has faced scrutiny regarding why authorities lacked advance knowledge of the planned action. Meanwhile, government officials condemned the behavior displayed in Portsmouth as intimidating and thuggish, while maintaining that peaceful protest remains a fundamental democratic right that must not escalate into disorder.
According to government figures, 16,513 people crossed the English Channel by small boat between January and September 2026, representing a 43 percent decrease compared to the same period last year. These arrivals accounted for 40 percent of asylum applications during the July 2025 to June 2026 timeframe, with Eritrea, Sudan, Afghanistan, Somalia, and Iran being the countries of origin for the majority of arrivals.
